Last year I received a phone call then a visit from Paula Johnson from Vass, NC
Last year I received a phone call then a visit from Paula Johnson from Vass, North Carolina. Vass is located near Pinehurst, known for golf and horses. Paula and her husband Bob own a large horse farm. Paula contracted me to fabricate and install, with her rendering the drawings and painting some rather unusual pieces of art.
In the end three English riders on horseback follow five hounds while the sly cunning fox hides and snickers from behind a tree. Each horse and rider weighs in excess of five hundred pounds each and is secured in place with a one thousand pound concrete foundation. The challenge was to have only one hoof of the horse attach to the foundation creating a freeze in motion as it presses forward. To accomplish this feat an elaborate steel internal skeleton had to be fabricated between the steel sheets. The principles and fundamentals of biology and physics were utilized in the fabrication process.
Once painted and the landscaping complete, the fox hunt theme captures the imagination of the onlooker. It took some time for Paula’s horses to become accustomed to the new members of her new art family.
Paula’s thoughts………………
I selected McCune Technology for my project because of David McCune's website showcasing his art. I was not dissapointed, not only does he have the knowledge, experience and excellent staff to fabricate high-quality steel productions, he is also a very talented and innovative artist. He gave me many invaluable insights into the artistic and structural details of the project that helped make it a better than even anticipated success!
David made the whole process lots of fun. His mantra was "enjoy the moment" which he and his staff echoed even when constructing the fairly formidable foundations for the sculptures in 95 degree heat!!! He invited me to watch the figures being cut out by the laser which was amazing to an uninitiated observer like me, and yes, he did push me along a bit when I needed it because I was a little timid at doing this, my first project of this kind, not only the medium but the size and scope.
I am ecstatic with the result, but sad that the process is over...wonder what I can do next so I can work with McCune Technology again?

Tonight artist David McCune displayed his art at Silver Coast Winery at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.
His new work is this year's summer show at the wine gallery was well received by the attendees. His use of color, form and texture captured the imagination of the onlookers. His new turtle wall sculpture was no doubt the hit of the show followed by his colorful abstracts. Be sure and take the time to view his art and enjoy the wine tours at Silver Coast Winery at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina this summer.
